A couple of weeks ago, our dogs (also know as “The Killers”) went charging to the back fence and were going after something – it was a hawk. It was spreading its wings out and puffing itself up in an effort to not become a mid-day snack of the 2 barking beasts that would surely rip his head off if given the chance. Seriously, our dogs are fine with us but if there is some sort of animal in our backyard, they will try to kill it. Squirrels, rabbits, opossum, birds, and snakes have all met their doom in our backyard over the years. Several times I’ve had to get up in the middle of the night and trudge out into the backyard half asleep to corner Goldie (Killer #1) and get her in the garage. She will bark ALL NIGHT LONG if she chases something up a tree – so in the garage she goes. Shadow (aka Killer #2 aka Dummy) just follows Goldie’s lead so once she’s in the garage, all is quiet. Anyway, we see quite few hawks around here and try as I might, I’ve never been able to get a decent shot. So, after chasing the dogs away I slowly approached the hawk to see if I could see something visibly wrong. I couldn’t. But something was wrong because it would not fly away. I fetched the camera and got a few good shots as I got within about 6 feet.
I called the SPCA and promply waited 15 minutes only to be hung up on. I called back and waited again. Much more and that hawk was going to be dog food. Anyway, they arrived 3 or 4 hours later. The hawk was still there and when we approached but it must have been feeling better because it flew away. Ha, take that SPCA!
